From production design to the highest-grossing Malayalam superheroine
In short: Before she was a leading star, Kalyani Priyadarshan worked behind the scenes in art direction. Today, she stands as a powerhouse of Indian cinema, recently starring in a landmark film that redefined the box office for female-led Indian productions.
Born in Chennai in 1993 to filmmaker Priyadarshan and actress Lissy, Kalyani Priyadarshan's path to stardom was not immediate. She began her career in the technical departments of cinema, serving as an assistant production designer for the Hindi film Krrish 3 in 2013 and later as an assistant art director for the Tamil film Iru Mugan in 2016.
Her transition to acting began with the 2017 Telugu film Hello. While the film was a below-average box office performer, her performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South. Over the following years, she navigated a complex career trajectory, experiencing both box office failures, such as the 2019 Telugu film Ranarangam, and significant commercial successes like the 2020 Malayalam film Varane Avashyamund.
The year 2022 proved to be a pivotal turning point. She appeared in a string of successful Malayalam releases, including Hridayam, Bro Daddy, and Thallumaala. This momentum culminated in the 2025 release of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra. The movie made history as India's and Malayalam cinema's debut superheroine feature, generating more than ₹300 crore to become the top-earning Malayalam production and securing her position among the industry's top-earning female stars.
Despite her massive commercial success, critics continue to observe her evolution. While some praise her as a 'name to reckon with,' others, such as Anandu Suresh, have noted that she may need to develop more vocal elasticity to avoid being restricted to a narrow range of roles.
