From Brazilian standout to WNBA star: the rapid rise of Kamilla Cardoso
In short: Few players transition from college dominance to professional stardom as explosively as Kamilla Cardoso. After securing two national titles and a tournament MVP title, the Brazilian center has become a formidable force in both the WNBA and the Chinese Basketball Association.
Kamilla Cardoso’s ascent began with a historic recruitment. A five-star prospect and the fifth-ranked player in her class according to ESPN, she arrived at Syracuse as the highest-rated recruit in the program's history. Her freshman season was equally impactful; she became the first player in Syracuse history to earn ACC Freshman of the Year, while also sharing the league's Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Her collegiate career reached its zenith at South Carolina. Following a transfer, Cardoso became a vital component of a championship-winning era, securing national titles in both 2022 and 2024. The 2024 postseason was particularly defining, as she earned the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player award after a commanding performance in the final, recording 15 points and 17 rebounds.
The Chicago Sky used the third pick in the 2024 WNBA draft to acquire Cardoso for her professional career. Despite facing early setbacks, including a shoulder injury that sidelined her for the first six games of her rookie season, she earned a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team. Her second season in 2025 saw her reach new heights, including a career-high 27-point game against the Los Angeles Sparks and earning the title of International Player of the Year in the WCBA.
Beyond the WNBA, Cardoso has been a cornerstone for the Brazilian national team. Her international resume includes a bronze medal at the 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup and gold medals at the 2022 South American Basketball Championship and the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, where she was named tournament MVP after leading Brazil to a victory over the United States.
