In short: A high-budget Indian epic weaves a complex tapestry of reincarnation, connecting a 2024 bounty hunter to a fierce tribal warrior from 1070. While the film's massive scale and visual effects aim for grandeur, the true heart lies in a centuries-old promise and a cycle of grief.

Set against two distinct timelines, the narrative of Kanguva explores the spiritual connection between Francis Theodore, a modern-day bounty hunter in 2024, and the legendary warrior Kanga. The story's roots reach back to the year 1070, during an era when Roman soldiers attempted to conquer Perumaachi, one of five islands near the southern Indian subcontinent. This historical conflict, involving local figures like Koduvan and the chieftain Senthee, sets the stage for a saga of betrayal and blood feuds. The tribal conflict was ignited when the death of Koduvan led the survivor Selumaara to warn the chieftain. This violence eventually forced Kanga and his protégé to live on the uninhabited Dark Island.

The film's mechanism of reincarnation drives the plot's tension. In the modern era, Francis is revealed to be the reincarnation of Kanga, while a young test subject named Zeta is the reincarnation of Poruva, a child raised by Kanga in the past. The conflict is further complicated by the presence of Ryan, a facility commander who is the reincarnation of Rathaangasan, a character driven by a vow of revenge following the eradication of Udhiran's lineage. The modern-day struggle involves a Russian biomedical facility near the Indian border. Here, the character Zeta escapes while being used for experiments involving brain enhancement and superpowers.

Produced with a budget of approximately ₹300–350 crore, the film is one of the most expensive Indian productions ever made. The scale is reflected in its technical ambitions, utilizing Alexa Super 35 cameras and extensive visual effects. Despite the massive undertaking and a performance by Suriya that received praise, the film's 2024 release met with negative critical reviews and a box-office gross of ₹106 crore, resulting in a commercial failure. The production was a massive undertaking, with filming spanning locations from Chennai and Goa to Kerala and Bangkok. To prepare for his role, the lead actor even lost 5 kilograms.
