From late-round draft pick to top-tier professional ice hockey defenseman
In short: Sami Niku’s journey through professional ice hockey is defined by resilience and rapid ascent. After being selected 198th overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft, he transitioned from the Finnish Liiga to the AHL, where he was eventually recognized as the league's premier defenseman in just one season.
Born on 10 October 1996, Sami Niku’s professional trajectory began in Finland. He made his Liiga debut with JYP Jyväskylä during the 2014–15 season. On 15 May 2017, Niku signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Winnipeg Jets following a 2016–17 season featuring 27 points in 59 games. He represented Finland in several international tournaments. This included the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championships and the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
During the 2017–18 season, he moved to North American hockey, playing primarily for the Jets' AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. His impact was immediate; he was voted the AHL's top defenseman and earned both AHL First All-Star and All-Rookie honours at the conclusion of that season. On 3 April 2018, he scored his first NHL goal during a Jets victory over the Montreal Canadiens. He also competed in the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
Niku's career has faced significant shifts, including a contract buyout by the Jets on 21 September 2021. Shortly after signing with the Montreal Canadiens, a concussion sustained during a pre-season game against the Ottawa Senators ruled him out indefinitely. Following a return to JYP Jyväskylä in 2022, Niku moved into the Swiss National League, signing with EHC Kloten for the 2024–25 season and subsequently joining Lausanne HC on 30 April 2025. He previously played for the Manitoba Moose. He also played for the Montreal Canadiens.
