From Toronto's courts to NBA dominance: the meteoric rise of Zach Edey
In short: A Canadian standout who transitioned from a three-star recruit to a collegiate legend. After dominating the Big Ten and winning back-to-back Naismith College Player of the Year awards, Zach Edey entered the NBA as a force to be reckoned with, rewriting Purdue's record books along the way.
Born in Toronto on May 14, 2002, Zach Edey's journey to professional basketball began in the Northern Kings Amateur Athletic Union program. After developing his skills at IMG Academy in Florida, he committed to Purdue University, where he became a transformative figure in the program's history. During his freshman season, he stood at 7 feet 4 inches, making him the tallest player in the history of the Big Ten Conference.
Edey's collegiate tenure was defined by unprecedented statistical milestones. He became the first player in Purdue history to reach 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, and eventually set school records for both, finishing with 2,516 points and 1,321 rebounds. His dominance earned him consensus National Player of the Year honors in both 2023 and 2024, making him the first player to win the Naismith College Player of the Year award back-to-back since Ralph Sampson did so in 1982 and 1983.
His influence reached a global level, competing for Canada during the 2021 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup and the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. In the 2023 World Cup, he was the only college player on the roster, helping Canada secure its first-ever World Cup medal. This success paved the way for his selection by the Memphis Grizzlies with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, marking the start of his professional career.
A unique statistic marked Edey's professional start: he was the inaugural NBA rookie to foul out within 15 minutes. Despite injuries, including ankle surgery in June 2025, he has continued to establish himself as a premier interior presence, recording a franchise rookie record of 21 rebounds against the Detroit Pistons on April 5, 2025.
