How one ancient Nubian capital thrived for over three thousand years

Kerma-Dukki Gel: A century of archaeological research · 49:39 · Video: The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the archaeological history of Kerma and Dukki Gel, the former capital of the Kingdom of Kush. This presentation examines how this strategic hub, positioned between African interior trade routes and maritime networks, evolved through millennia of occupation and political shifts.

Kerma served as the primary seat of power for the Kingdom of Kush, the earliest Nubian state. Excavated by figures including George A. Reisner and later the Swiss-French-Sudanese mission, the site reveals a complex history spanning three millennia. It functioned as a Kushite capital, an Egyptian colonial outpost, and eventually a significant religious center under the 25th Dynasty and subsequent Napatan and Meroitic rulers.

The site remains a focal point for international research, currently managed by teams including Séverine Marchi of the French National Centre for Scientific Research. Despite the regional conflict that began in April 2023, ongoing efforts by the French Section of the Sudan Antiquities Directorate focus on preserving this UNESCO-listed heritage for future study.
