Could a massive Iron Age hoard reveal the funeral of a Celtic queen?
In short: Archaeologists have unearthed over 950 metal artefacts near Melsonby, Yorkshire, dating back 2,000 years. This remarkable find, which includes chariot parts and ceremonial weapons, offers a rare glimpse into Iron Age society and may even point to a royal funeral rite.
Discovered by a metal detectorist in 2021, the Melsonby hoard consists of two separate deposits containing a vast array of items, such as iron wheel tires, cauldrons, an ornate wine-mixing bowl, and spearheads. The scale of the discovery—the largest of its kind in Britain—has provided researchers with significant new data regarding ancient technology, trade, and social structures.
Experts from institutions including Durham University and The British Museum are currently studying the collection. One compelling theory suggests these burned metal objects were intentionally deposited as part of a high-status funeral ceremony, potentially honoring a powerful Celtic queen.
