In short: Before modern luxury arenas, Kezar Stadium defined San Francisco sports. It hosted the 49ers, legendary high school rivalries, and even served as a film set for Dirty Harry. Yet, for professional athletes, the venue was a nightmare of shredded turf, long dusty tunnels, and aggressive, defecating seagulls during the fourth quarter.

Opened in 1925 following a donation from the estate of Mary Kezar and city funding, the stadium was designed to keep San Francisco competitive with other major cities. It quickly became a versatile hub for everything from auto racing and cricket to the East–West Shrine Game. By 1928, a high school championship game between Lowell and Polytechnic drew over 50,000 spectators, a northern California record that remains unbroken today.

The stadium’s professional era was marked by grit and controversy. As the original home of the 49ers and the Oakland Raiders, it witnessed iconic moments like the first 'alley-oop' and Jim Marshall's infamous 1964 'wrong way run.' However, the facility was notoriously difficult. In his memoir, Art Donovan described the dread visiting teams felt, citing inadequate locker rooms and a field plagued by rain and overuse. Fans were equally volatile; the final NFL game held there in 1971 ended with 22 arrests following violent brawls in the stands.

Following the 49ers' departure to Candlestick Park, the stadium transitioned into a concert venue, hosting legends like Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan. In 1989, the original structure was demolished and replaced with a modern, smaller facility seating 10,000. While the new stadium features an all-weather track and historic seats salvaged from Candlestick Park, it retains a connection to its past through a replica arch and a plaque honoring NFL Hall of Famer Bob St. Clair, who played his high school and college ball on the original site.
