The fatal consequences of a knock on the wrong door
In short: A routine disturbance call in Florida turned into a tragedy when a sheriff's deputy arrived at the wrong apartment. What followed was a split-second interaction that sparked a national conversation about police procedure, self-defense, and the devastating reality of human error in high-stakes law enforcement.
On May 3, 2024, Deputy Eddie Duran of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance report at a residential complex in Fort Walton Beach. Following a tip from a resident about past yelling and slapping sounds, Duran arrived at Apartment 1401. Body camera footage revealed that he spent approximately 15 seconds listening before knocking three times and announcing his identity. During this time, Roger Fortson, a United States Air Force serviceman, was inside the apartment. Believing an intruder was breaking in because he could not see anyone through his peephole, Fortson armed himself.
The confrontation occurred when Fortson opened the door holding a gun pointed downward at his side. Deputy Duran immediately ordered him to step back and fired five or six shots. Consequently, the agency determined the use of deadly force was not objectively reasonable and violated policy.
The incident led to significant legal and public fallout. Deputy Duran was fired on May 31, 2024, after the internal probe identified him as the shooter. He was later arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm in August 2024. Despite the investigation's findings regarding the lack of hostile movement, a jury ultimately acquitted Duran at his trial. The case remains a stark example of how quickly
