In short: From a local shop in a developing capital to a Fortune Global 500 titan, the story of Koç Holding is the story of Turkey's industrialization. Today, this massive conglomerate accounts for up to 7% of the nation's total exports, spanning everything from energy to defense.

The origins of Koç Holding lie in 1926, when Vehbi Koç established a small general store in Ankara. As the city was being developed as Turkey's new capital, the business expanded alongside the nation's rapid urban growth, moving into hardware and construction. By 1963, the various industrial ventures managed by Vehbi Koç were formally reorganized into the structure known today as Koç Holding.

The company's portfolio is vast and deeply integrated into the Turkish economy. Its energy arm, Tüpraş, operates the majority of Turkey's oil refineries and generates nearly half of the group's total revenue. The conglomerate also oversees Arçelik, a household appliance giant that operates 46 manufacturing plants across more and more than 100 countries, managing brands like Beko, Grundig, and Indesit.

Leadership has transitioned through three generations of the Koç family. Following Vehbi Koç's tenure, his son Rahmi M. Koç took the chairmanship in 1984. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Mustafa V. Koç, in 2003. Following Mustafa's death in 2016, Ömer Koç assumed the role of chairman. The group's scale is immense, comprising 113 companies and employing approximately 124,000 people.

Despite its economic dominance, the group has faced significant challenges. In June 2026, Koç Holding firms were targeted in gunfire attacks following controversial remarks made by Rahmi Koç regarding Kurdish women. An armed group known as Ertekinler claimed responsibility for the violence, which prompted a public apology from the company and a legal investigation into whether the remarks targeted specific ethnic identities.
