The man who faked his death to escape a life in the air force
In short: In 2021, the Malayalam film Kurup brought to life the saga of Sukumara Kurup, a fugitive who mastered the art of disappearing. Through elaborate schemes involving fake deaths and stolen identities, he transformed from a soldier into an international criminal, leaving a trail of mystery that baffled investigators for decades.
The 2021 biographical crime thriller *Kurup* explores the life of Sukumara Kurup, a notorious fugitive from Kerala. The film, starring Dulquer Salmaan and directed by Srinath Rajendran, follows the criminal's complex journey of evasion. Originally born as Gopikrishnan Shivasankaran Pillai, he was forcibly sent to the Indian Air Force by his uncle after failing to obtain a degree. Seeking to escape the life of the force, he faked his own death to assume the identity of Sudhakara Kurup. His transformation began after he met Peter, a fellow inmate in the air force. This new life allowed him to eventually marry Sharadha, the daughter of his family's former maid.
The narrative highlights Kurup's increasing greed and sophistication. After marrying Sharadha and living a luxurious life in Persia, he was driven by the desire to steal $3 million from Prince Walid, the son of the Shah. To facilitate his crimes and secure insurance money—specifically a plan involving ₹8 Lakhs—Kurup and his accomplices, including Bhasi Pillai and Ponnachan, orchestrated a murder of a man named Charlie to fabricate his death. This scheme was designed to mislead the police, specifically the investigator DYSP Krishnadas. His schemes were further complicated by the 1976 Iranian Revolution, which forced him to return to his home region. He also utilized a specific insurance policy to fund his elaborate ruses.
Despite the elaborate deception, the film depicts a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. Kurup successfully evaded capture multiple times, moving through locations like Bhopal, Bombay, and eventually escaping via a cruise ship. The story concludes with the suggestion of his continued existence under new aliases, such as Alexander Gelmosby, as he continues to evade international intelligence agencies across Eurasia and the Americas. The investigation was led by an officer named Krishnadas, who discovered the criminal's secrets through a personal diary. Even after his apparent demise, he was later spotted by police in Helsinki.
