In short: To avenge his slaughtered clan, Kurapika developed a power so immense it defies the natural limits of his body. Every moment he uses his ultimate ability to hunt his enemies, he pays a devastating price: one hour of his remaining lifespan is sacrificed for every single second of use.

Kurapika is the sole survivor of the Kurta Clan, a people defined by irises that glow scarlet during moments of intense emotion. Five years before the main series begins, a criminal syndicate known as the Phantom Troupe massacred his kin, stealing their eyes to sell on the black market. Driven by this trauma, Kurapika became a Hunter to secure the resources necessary for vengeance.

His combat style is deeply tied to his psychology. While he typically uses 'Conjuration' to manifest chains from his hand, his rage triggers a transformation into a 'Specialist.' By activating a technique called Emperor Time: Absolute Mastery, he can access 100% of all Nen types—a feat normally impossible for most practitioners. However, the source material establishes a brutal mechanical cost: this mastery consumes one hour of his life for every second it is active.

This balance of power and sacrifice has made him a complex figure in manga history. Creator Yoshihiro Togashi drew inspiration from Miyazaki's 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,' specifically the Ohmu creatures whose eyes turn red when driven into a berserk rage. Critics often praise Kurapika for the duality of his personality—maintaining a calm, friendly demeanor with allies while harboring a darker, more ruthless side during his hunt for the Troupe.

The character's narrative weight is so significant that early production attempts to kill him off were scrapped by Togashi because they didn't fit the intended scope. Instead, his story has been expanded through various media, including a 2013 film and a prequel manga, exploring his childhood and the specific mechanics of his 'Judgement Chain' abilities.
