The woman who lived in someone else's skin for 25 years
In short: In a bizarre twist of comic book continuity, two women shared one identity while inhabiting different bodies. For over two decades, the line between them was so blurred that even they didn't know who was who until a terminal virus forced a final, tragic revelation.
The saga began in 1989 when Betsy Braddock, a British woman, passed through a magical portal called the Siege Perilous. The experience left her with amnesia and transformed her appearance into that of a Japanese woman with ninja powers. However, later writers clarified that this wasn't just a transformation; it was actually a body swap with an assassin named Kwannon. Because of a 'psychic lock,' both women eventually believed they were the original Betsy Braddock.
In 1993, Kwannon appeared as a separate character claiming to be the real Betsy. For years, she operated under the names Revanche and Elizabeth. The narrative was famously convoluted due to early continuity errors regarding how these two identities merged. It wasn't until 1994 that the mystery ended: while dying from the Legacy Virus, the woman known as Revanche finally recovered her memories, revealing herself as Kwannon on her deathbed.
The history of their connection is rooted in a tragic accident where Kwannon was left comatose after falling into water. To save her, the Hand used magic and alien technology to place her mind into Betsy's body. This process intermingled their DNA, turning both into Eurasian females with purple hair and telepathic abilities. After being resurrected in 2018, Kwannon reclaimed her original identity as Psylocke, while Betsy returned to her own body as Captain Britain.
Their relationship remains one of the most complex in Marvel history. In recent stories, they have faced off in alternate realities where Kwannon was even an ex-wife. Ultimately, they reached a psychic truce: acknowledging that their identities are permanently fused and that neither is at fault for the tragedy of their shared existence.
