From family bankruptcy to NBA champion: the resilient journey of Landry Shamet
In short: Before reaching the pinnacle of professional basketball, Landry Shamet faced significant adversity. During his middle school years, his family lost their duplex after a mortgage increase led to bankruptcy. Today, he stands as a key contributor to the New York Knicks' historic championship success.
Landry Shamet's path to the NBA was marked by both personal and professional hurdles. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 13, 1997, to a single mother, Shamet experienced financial hardship during his youth when his family lost their home due to bankruptcy. His professional ascent began at Wichita State, where he overcame a foot injury that required surgery to a stress fracture to become a standout point guard. During his second year, he stood out as one of just two sophomores included on the 2018 Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list.
Drafted 26th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018, Shamet's career has been defined by movement and high-impact performances. His career includes stints with the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, and 76ers. His time with the Suns included a career-high 31 points in December 2022, where he tied a franchise record by making nine three-pointers in a single game.
Shamet's career reached a historic peak with the New York Knicks. In the 2024–25 season, he achieved a remarkable postseason feat, hitting 11 of 12 three-point attempts during the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers—a 91.7% shooting percentage. This remains the highest ever in an NBA postseason series for a player attempting at least ten shots. This performance helped propel the Knicks to their first NBA championship in 53 years, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 4–1 in the Finals.
