In short: Released in early 2016, Lego Marvel's Avengers attempted to bridge the gap between comic book lore and the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it offered over two hundred playable characters, critics were divided on whether this sequel truly managed to outshine its predecessor.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published this title, which Traveller's Tales created. On January 26, 2016, the game was released. Unlike its predecessor, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, which relied on original voice acting, this installment utilized archival audio and music directly from the films. This allowed actors like Hayley Atwell, Michael Peña, and Ming-Na Wen to reprise their roles, alongside Stan Lee returning to voice himself.

The gameplay structure follows the traditional LEGO formula, blending action with environmental puzzle-solving. While the narrative primarily draws from The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, it also incorporates single levels inspired by films like Captain America: The First Avenger and Iron Man 3. The game expanded its scope by introducing seven new significant hubs, including Asgard, Sokovia, and Malibu, alongside the familiar New York City.

Despite the inclusion of diverse characters—ranging from mainstream heroes like Iron Man to comic book figures like Kamala Khan and Devil Dinosaur—the reception was mixed. Review aggregators like Metacritic noted average scores, with some critics, such as those at PC Gamer, suggesting the title offered little innovation over the previous game. However, for many, the game served as a celebration of the franchise, blending cinematic moments with the playful spirit of LEGO.

The game's longevity was supported by various downloadable content releases. A season pass provided levels inspired by the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, plus a Spider-Man pack in May 2016. It also featured comic-style content for Doctor Strange and Black Panther.
