How Indian badminton star H. S. Prannoy climbed to a career-high world ranking
In short: Born in Thiruvananthapuram, H. S. Prannoy has become a formidable force in international badminton. From his early promise at the 2010 Youth Olympics to his pivotal role in India's historic 2022 Thomas Cup victory, Prannoy has navigated years of injury and inconsistency to reach the sport's elite global rankings.
Prannoy Haseena Sunil Kumar, known professionally as H. S. Prannoy, began his ascent in 2010 by securing a silver medal at the Summer Youth Olympics. Following this early success, he faced a challenging period marked by injuries and fluctuating form. However, he regained momentum in 2014, notably winning the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold and reaching the final of the Vietnam Open. These performances established him as a serious contender on the international circuit, ending that year as the third-highest ranked Indian player at world number 21.
The athlete's career is defined by his ability to upset top-tier opponents. In 2015, he defeated world number 2 Jan Ø. Jørgensen at the India Super Series. By 2017, he demonstrated his tactical prowess by defeating Olympic silver medalist Lee Chong Wei and Olympic champion Chen Long in consecutive matches at the Indonesia Open. His consistency eventually culminated in a career-high world ranking of number 6 in August 2023, supported by bronze medal performances at the 2022 Asian Games and the 2023 World Championships.
Prannoy’s contribution to team events has been equally significant. He was a key member of the Indian squad that won the 2022 Thomas Cup, where he famously won deciding matches in both the quarter-final against Malaysia and the semi-final against Denmark. These high-pressure victories helped India secure its first-ever medal in the tournament. Today, training at the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, Prannoy remains a central figure in Indian badminton, having successfully re-entered the top 15 of the BWF world rankings after a four-year hiatus.
