In short: Ligue 2 didn't just appear; it was forged in the fires of a professionalization dispute. Born a year after the top flight, the second division was populated by clubs who actively opposed the new rules of the game, creating a league defined by resistance and regional rivalry.

Established in 1933, Ligue 2 (originally known as Division 2) emerged just one year after the creation of France's all-professional first division. Its inaugural season was unique: it featured the six clubs relegated from the 1932–33 National season alongside numerous clubs that had specifically opposed the creation of the first division the previous year. This meant the league's foundation was rooted in a conflict over the subjective criteria required to achieve professional status.

The structure of the league was initially experimental. The first year featured 23 clubs split into two regional groups: Nord and Sud. The Nord section held 14 clubs, while the Sud section held nine. To determine promotion, winners of each group faced off. On May 20, 1934, Red Star Saint-Ouen defeated Olympique Alès 3–2 to be crowned the inaugural champions. However, the league's size was volatile; by the 1934–35 season, it shrank to 16 teams due to mergers and foldings, before ballooning to 25 teams in 1936.

The league underwent significant modernization and rebranding over the decades. It remained Division 2 until 2002, when it was officially renamed Ligue 2. Today, it operates as a core part of the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), serving as a bridge for clubs on the brink of professionalism. It currently features 18 clubs, a number recently contracted from 20 in December 2021 to align with the structure of Ligue 1.
