From an agricultural village in Assam to the Olympic podium
In short: Born to farming parents in Baramukhia, Lovlina Borgohain transitioned from learning Muay Thai with her sisters to becoming a global boxing icon. Her journey through the weight classes has led her to become one of the most decorated Indian boxers in history.
Lovlina Borgohain’s ascent began in the Golaghat district of Assam, where she was raised in an agricultural family. While she and her sisters initially trained in the Thai martial art of Muay Thai, Borgohain eventually pivoted to boxing. Her talent was first identified in 2013 by coach Padum Boro during a Sports Authority of India camp, leading her to train in Guwahati under Boro and later under Sandhya Gurung.
Her competitive career is marked by a steady climb through the international ranks. After early successes in 2017 and 2018, she achieved a historic milestone at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Competing in the women's welterweight event, she defeated opponents from Germany and Taiwan before falling to Turkey's Busenaz Sürmeneli in the semi-finals. This bronze medal made her only the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal and the first female athlete from Assam to represent India at the Summer Olympics.
Borgohain has since moved between the welterweight, light middleweight, and middleweight classes. Her recent achievements include a gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya and a silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Beyond the ring, her impact is recognized through significant state and national honours, including the Arjuna Award in 2020 and the Khel Ratna Award in 2021. In 2022, the Government of Assam also appointed her as a deputy superintendent of police.
