From rural mud wrestling to the global Olympic stage
In short: Born in a small Haryana village, Bajrang Punia rose from training in local mud schools to become India's first and only wrestler to secure four World Championship medals. His journey spans elite international podiums and a recent, high-profile transition into the arena of national politics.
Bajrang Punia’s ascent began in the village of Khudan, Jhajayar, where his father, also a wrestler, encouraged him to pursue the sport at age seven. Lacking the funds for traditional athletic training, Punia practiced in local mud wrestling schools and later moved to Sonepat in 2015 to attend a regional center of the Sports Authority of India. His early career was marked by intense dedication, often skipping school to attend practice sessions at Chattarsal Stadium under the guidance of trainer Ramphal Mann.
On the mat, Punia achieved unprecedented success for an Indian grappler. He was the first Indian wrestler to reach the World No. 1 ranking and the only one to hold that position consistently for two years. His medal tally includes a bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, alongside multiple golds from the Asian Games, Asian Championships, and Commonwealth Games. His dominance in the 65 kg freestyle category was particularly notable, including a gold medal victory at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
In recent years, Punia’s path has shifted from the wrestling mat to the political landscape. After serving as a Gazetted officer OSD Sports for the Indian Railways, he resigned in September 2024. On 7 September 2024, he joined the Indian National Congress alongside fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat. By 22 October 2024, he assumed the role of Working President of the All India Kisan Congress, a position intended to amplify the voices of India's farmers and laborers.
