The ambitious plan to bridge the gap in Scottish football
In short: In 2013, a new league was born with a singular mission: to create a true pyramid system. By connecting regional leagues to the professional ranks, the Lowland League changed the stakes for semi-professional clubs, offering a high-stakes pathway to the very top of the Scottish game.
Founded in June 2013 following a unanimous vote by the Scottish Football Association, the Lowland Football League was designed to establish a formal hierarchy. Its goal was to integrate national divisions with junior and amateur levels through a structured system of promotion and relegation. Since the 2014–15 season, the league has functioned as a vital fifth-tier feeder to the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL).
The mechanism for advancement is a rigorous multi-stage play-off. The Lowland League champion must first face the Highland Football League champions in a two-legged tie. If successful, they proceed to a final play-off against the bottom club from Scottish League Two. This pathway has already proven fruitful; clubs like Edinburgh City, Kelty Hearts, and The Spartans have all successfully navigated this route to reach the SPFL.
The league's structure is currently undergoing its most significant evolution since its inception. After a decade of operating as a single division of 18 clubs, the 2025–26 season will mark the end of the current format. Following an SFA-approved restructure, the league will split into two distinct entities—Lowland League East and Lowlan League West—starting in the 2026–27 season.
While the league has grown from 12 founding members to its current size, it has also faced significant volatility. The 2018–19 season saw the resignation of Selkirk, leading the board to expunge all their data from the records. Additionally, the league has experimented with the inclusion of 'B' teams from major clubs like Celtic and Hearts, though the landscape of these partnerships continues to shift.
