The record-breaking rise of Australian defender Lucas Herrington
In short: From the youth academies of Brisbane to a £17 million Premier League transfer, Lucas Herrington has rewritten the history books. In just a few seasons, the central defender has become Australia's most expensive footballer, making waves from the A-League to the FIFA World Cup.
Born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 5 September 2007, Lucas Herrington's ascent through professional soccer has been remarkably rapid. Having refined his talent within the youth setups of Brisbane City FC, Toowong FC and Taringa Rovers, he entered the Brisbane Roar academy in 2019. His professional journey began in earnest during the 2024–25 season, making his senior debut for the Roar on 14 December 2024 against the Western Sydney Wanderers.
Herrington's impact was immediate. During his first professional season, he made 17 appearances, including a goal against Sydney FC in January 2025. By the time he departed Brisbane Roar on 3 January 2026 for a club-record fee, he had amassed 29 senior appearances. His move to the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer proved even more transformative. Not only did he become the Rapids' record signing, but his transfer also set a new benchmark as the highest fee ever paid for a defender in MLS history.
The pinnacle of his early career arrived in 2026. After representing Australia in the FIFA World Cup—where he became the nation's youngest-ever World Cup starter during a group stage match against Paraguay—he moved to the English Premier League. Joining Hull City on 12 August 2026 for a fee reported to be approximately £17 million, he surpassed the previous Australian record held by Harry Souttar. This meteoric rise highlights a player capable of performing on the world's biggest stages, from the MLS All-Star Game to the intense atmosphere of the Premier League.
