In short: Before he was an NFL standout, Luke Willson was a standout on the baseball diamond. After choosing football over a professional baseball career with the Toronto Blue Jays, he rose from a fifth-round draft pick to a Super Bowl XLVIII champion, proving that versatility is a powerful asset in professional sports.

Born in Canada on January 15, 1990, Luke Willson’s professional path was not a straight line. In 2008, he played for the Canadian Junior National baseball team, and by 2011, he had signed with the Toronto Blue Jays organization. However, Willson ultimately chose to pivot back to football, a decision that would lead him to Rice University from 2009 through 2012.

His collegiate performance at Rice set the stage for a significant NFL career. Despite being selected in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL draft, Willson quickly distinguished himself. By the end of his rookie season, Football Outsiders graded him as the second most valuable rookie tight end, even though he was the eighth tight end selected that year. His immediate impact included playing in every game for the Seattle Seahawks in 2013 and contributing to their 43–8 blowout victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Willson's career was marked by resilience and multiple stints with the Seahawks. He played for the Detroit Lions in 2018, had a brief time with the Oakland Raiders in 2019, and spent part of the 2020 season with the Baltimore Ravens. After a final period with Seattle, he announced his retirement in the 2021 offseason, citing a heart-related condition. Since retiring, he has transitioned into media, working as an analyst for TSN and hosting his own podcast, "Film Never Lies."
