In short: In a world of high-stakes espionage and lethal betrayals, one constant remains. Luther Stickell, the elite hacker known as 'The Net Ranger,' has transitioned from a reluctant specialist to Ethan Hunt's most trusted confidant, surviving nearly every impossible scenario the IMF has thrown his way.

Luther Stickell, portrayed by Ving Rhames, is the technical backbone of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). Debuting in the 1996 movie, he remains the sole individual apart from Ethan Hunt to feature in every one of the eight films. Originally known in the hacking and phreaking community by nicknames like 'The Net Ranger' and 'Phineas Phreak,' Luther was famously recruited for his legendary feat of being the only man alive to hack NATO's Ghost Com. During his first mission, he was brought on board as a 'Cyber-Ops' specialist. He gained access to the CIA mainframe by triggering a fire alarm through the building's electrical system.

His relationship with Ethan Hunt has evolved from a professional partnership into a deep, personal friendship. In the early missions, Luther was a soft-spoken, reliable specialist. By the later films, he had become Hunt's most vital confidant, even teaching Hunt's fiancée, Julia, how to become a 'ghost' to evade pursuit. His technical expertise ranges from hijacking Russian satellites to managing remote-controlled sentry guns and developing advanced tech subterfuge to combat the Entity, an advanced AI. He has utilized GPS tracking satellites to monitor moles and has even provided voice patches to help Ethan mimic other individuals. His skills were also showcased in video games like Operation Surma.

However, the character's journey is marked by significant peril. In 'Mission: Impossible 2,' he narrowly escaped a bomb planted under his observation van. In the final chapter, 'The Final Reckoning,' Luther faces his ultimate sacrifice. After being diagnosed with an unspecified illness, he works to build a 'poison pill' designed to incapacitate the Entity, eventually sacrificing himself to minimize the blast from a bomb planted by the antagonist Gabriel. This final act occurs after the villain Gabriel steals his specialized device. His death is ultimately commemorated through a farewell message left within the very tool he created.
