In short: Lyle Alzado was a titan of the gridiron, famous for an intimidating, violent style of play. But behind the sacks and Super Bowl glory lay a complex man using professional football as a crucible to channel the anger of a difficult upbringing.

Born in Brooklyn in 1949, Alzado’s early life was marked by instability. Following his father's departure during his high school years, his brother, Peter, noted that the violence seen on the field was a way for Lyle to express frustration toward his childhood environment, characterized by an absent, alcoholic father and an overworked mother.

His path to the NFL was anything but certain. After being asked to leave Kilgore College, he played in the relative obscurity of the NAIA at Yankton College. He was discovered by Denver Broncos scout Stan Jones, who happened to be watching films at a nearby school due to car trouble. This chance encounter led to Alzable being drafted 79th overall in 1971.

Alzado’s career spanned 15 years, including stints with the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, and the Los Angeles Raiders, with whom he won Super Bowl XVIII. While known for his 'split personality'—being a 'gentle giant' off the field while remaining a combative force during games—he was also a pioneer in discussing the dark side of athletic performance. He was one of the first major American sports figures to publicly admit to long-term anabolic steroid use, which he began in 1969. In his final year, battling a fatal brain tumor, he asserted that his steroid addiction had directly contributed to his illness.

Beyond the field, Alzado was a versatile figure, appearing in films like 'Ernest Goes to Camp' and even participating in an exhibition boxing match against Muhammad Ali in 1979. He passed away in 1992 at the age of 43.
