In short: Founded in 1891 on the island of Djurgården, this Stockholm club rose from its industrial, working-class roots to conquer the Swedish top tier. From financial deficits to record-breaking transfers, discover the resilient history of the 'Iron Stoves'.

Djurgårdens IF Fotboll, commonly known as DIF, was established on 12 March 1891 by John G. Jansson at a café in central Stockholm. While the club's identity was deeply rooted in the dockyard-industry working class through the mid-20th century, its reach has expanded across all socio-economic spheres in Stockholm and Sweden. The club's football department specifically formed in 1899, following its first match in July of that year.

The club's history is defined by distinct eras of dominance. The first period of success arrived in the 1910s with four national titles, followed by a second era in the 1950s and 1960s. The most recent period of glory occurred during the first half of the 2000s, where they secured three league titles and three cup wins. This era included a notable 2–2 draw against Juventus at Stadio Delle Alpi.

Despite periods of instability—including a 12 million Swedish krona deficit in 1987 and near-bankruptcy in the 1990s—the club has modernized its operations. Recent years have seen a shift toward data-led recruitment, utilizing Jamestown Analytics to assist in summer signings. This strategic approach, alongside record-breaking player sales like Michael Olunga for SEK 40 million in 2017 and Lucas Bergvall for €10 million in 2024, has helped transform the club's financial standing.

The club's fierce rivalry with AIK, known as the 'Tvillingderbyt' or Derby of the twins, stems from both clubs being founded within weeks of each other in 1891. While AIK holds 21 titles to Djurgården's 12, the rivalry remains one of the most significant in Swedish football.
