In short: Born in Barcelona, Manolo Márquez retired from professional play at 28 to pursue coaching. His career has spanned continents, from Spanish lower-league clubs to a historic title in India. Recently, he balanced dual roles as a club manager and national team coach, navigating a complex path through global football.

Manuel Márquez Roca, known as Manolo Márquez, began his coaching journey in 2002 with his final club as a player, Penya Barcelonista Anguera. His early career was defined by stints at various Spanish clubs, including Prat, Europa, and Badalona. While he achieved promotion to the third tier with Las Palmas B, his tenure at the top level in La Liga was brief, lasting only six league matches in 2017 before he resigned following a home defeat to Leganés.

Márquez eventually found significant success in the Indian Super League. After joining Hyderabad in 2020, he led the team to their first-ever league title in the 2021–22 season. His reputation in India grew, leading to his appointment as head coach of Goa in 2023. By July 2024, he was named head coach of the Indian national team, an unusual arrangement that allowed him to manage both the national squad and Goa concurrently until the conclusion of the 2024–25 season.

His tenure with the national team was marked by challenges, including a 489-day winless streak that finally ended in March 2025 with a 3-0 victory against the Maldives. However, the dual-role experiment was short-lived. Following a technical committee meeting in July 2025, the All India Football Federation announced the mutual termination of his contract. Márquez subsequently returned to his position as head coach of Goa for the 2025–26 season, continuing a career defined by frequent transitions and international movement.
