From a €9 million Bundesliga prospect to an €18 million Roma mainstay
In short: In just five years, Manu Koné has transitioned from a promising Toulouse debutant to a vital engine in the Roma midfield. His journey through the Bundesliga and Serie A reveals a player whose impact is measured by both tactical precision and high-stakes transfers.
Born in Colombes to Ivorian parents, Manu Koné’s professional ascent began on 24 May 2019, when he made his debut for Toulouse in a match against Dijon. His rapid rise caught the attention of German scouts, leading to a €9 million move to Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2021. During his time in the Bundesliga, Koné became known for his physical presence and tenacity, even tying for the most yellow cards in the 2022–23 season with 12 bookings.
Koné’s tenure in Germany was marked by significant individual moments, such as scoring against Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal in October 2021. However, his progress was occasionally hampered by injuries, including a knee injury in June 2023 and a thigh injury in March 2024. Despite these setbacks, his ability to perform in high-pressure environments remained evident, particularly in his ability to find the net against top-tier opposition like Borussia Dortmund.
In August 2024, Koné moved to Italy to join Roma in a deal estimated at €18 million. The transfer, structured as a loan with an obligation to buy, saw him quickly integrate into the Giallorossi lineup. His impact was felt immediately in the UEFA Europa League, notably in a December victory over Braga where he recorded seven key passes. While his first season in Rome involved navigating a period of significant managerial instability—with the club employing three different coaches—Koné established himself as an indispensable figure in the squad.
