In short: Before he was a head coach, Manny Diaz was a production assistant at ESPN. Today, he is known for creating one of college football's most famous traditions: the Turnover Chain. His ability to transform defensive units has taken him from the sidelines of Florida State to the helm of Duke University.

Manny Diaz's coaching journey is defined by high-impact defensive stints and a knack for creating memorable team identities. While serving as the defensive coordinator for the University of Miami, Diaz is credited as the mastermind behind the 'Turnover Chain.' This Cuban link chain, featuring a charm shaped like the school's 'U' logo and designed by jeweler A.J. The Jeweler, became a symbol of the team's success. He later introduced a second version, featuring the mascot Sebastian the Ibis, during a home opener against Savannah State.

Diaz has a proven track record of revitalizing programs. At Mississippi State, he helped orchestrate a dramatic turnaround in 2010, moving the defense from 71st in scoring defense in 2009 to 22nd in 2010. His defensive units have frequently ranked among the nation's elite. At NC State in 2004, his unit was the top-ranked total defense in the country, allowing just over 220 yards per game. During his tenure at Middle Tennessee State, his defense led the conference in sacks and tackles for loss twice.

His career has seen significant shifts, including a brief departure from Temple University just two weeks after being hired to return to his roots at Miami. Since then, he has held roles as a defensive coordinator at Penn State, where he helped lead the 2nd ranked total defense in the country, and as the head coach at Duke University. In 2025, Diaz led the Duke Blue Devils to an ACC championship victory over Virginia, followed by a 42–39 win in the Sun Bowl against Arizona State.
