In short: Before she was a rock legend, Mariska Veres was a classically trained musician with a complex heritage. Known for her jet-black wig and sultry voice, she led Shocking Blue to worldwide fame, transforming from a 'painted doll' into a versatile artist who embraced her Romani roots.

Born Maria Elisabeth Ender in The Hague, Veres possessed a rich, multicultural lineage. Her father, Lulaj Veres, was a Hungarian violinist of Roma descent who had fled to the Netherlands in 1939, while her mother was of German, French, and Russian heritage. This diverse background deeply influenced her later musical explorations, including her 2003 album, Gipsy Heart, which revisited her Romani roots.

Her ascent to stardom began in the 1960s. After performing with various groups like Les Mystères and the Motowns, she joined Shocking Blue in 1968 to replace Fred de Wilde. By 1969 and 1970, the band achieved massive international success with the single "Venus." During this era, her persona was defined by an eccentric, highly stylized appearance, featuring long black hair—which was actually a wig—and heavy kohl around her eyes.

Veres's career was marked by constant reinvention. Following the 1974 split of Shocking Blue, she pursued a solo career with hits like "Take Me High" and "Lovin' You," primarily finding success in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. She later pivoted to jazz with the Shocking Jazz Quintet in 1993. Despite her immense fame, she often felt disconnected from her public image, once describing herself as a 'painted doll' during her early years of stardom.

Tragically, Veres's life was cut short. After a diagnosis of gallbladder cancer, she passed away on December 2, 2006, at the age of 59, only three weeks after the disease was detected.
