From a mold-ridden house to the heights of European basketball
In short: MarJon Beauchamp’s path to the NBA was defined by unconventional choices: moving schools to find motivation, training in private programs, and navigating the complex rules of amateur status. His journey reveals how personal health hurdles and strategic pivots can shape a professional athlete's trajectory.
Beauchamp's high school career was marked by significant geographical and institutional shifts. After moving from Yakima to Seattle to face elite competition, he played for Nathan Hale High School, where he was a reserve for a team that achieved a 29–0 record. Seeking a different environment, he transferred to Garfield High School, winning a second consecutive Class 3A state championship. However, his junior year saw a move to Rainier Beach High School, a transition prompted by a lack of academic motivation and physical illness caused by mold in his previous residence.
His path to the professional ranks was not a straight line. After being rated a five-star recruit, he initially planned to forgo college in 2019 to train with Chameleon BX in San Francisco. The COVID-19 pandemic forced him back to Washington, where he eventually joined Yakima Valley Community College in 2021. Despite drawing interest from major programs like LSU and Texas Tech, he opted out of Division I basketball due to concerns regarding his amateur status, eventually signing with the NBA G League Ignite in late 2021.
Beauchamp's professional career has been a whirlwind of movement. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2022 and later moved through the Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks. Following a brief stint with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2025, he signed with Bayern Munich in August 2026 to play in the German Basketball Bundesliga and the EuroLeague. This journey highlights the resilience required to navigate the volatile landscape of modern professional sports.
Beyond the court, Beauchamp carries a significant legacy. His ancestry includes the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians as well as the Mission Indians. Rooted in a legacy of local governance, he descends from Henry Beauchamp, the inaugural African-American mayor of Yakima.
