The defensive engine driving Feyenoord and Brighton to new heights
In short: From a youth academy in Twente to the Premier League, Mats Wieffer has become a vital tactical asset. Known for his energy and interceptions, he has transitioned from a promising talent at Excelsior to a record-breaking transfer for Feyenoord, eventually landing a high-profile move to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Born in Borne on 16 November 1999, Mats Wieffer's professional journey began in earnest with Twente. After making his professional debut in October 2018, he moved to Excelsior in June 2020. His influence was instant; receiving 26% of the votes, he earned the Excelsior Player of the Year title following his debut campaign.
Wieffer's move to Feyenoord in June 2022 marked a significant step up. He became a cornerstone of their midfield, notably scoring a crucial goal in a 1–0 victory over Roma during the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals on 13 April 2023. His ability to link offense and defense earned him the reputation of being the 'missing link' for the club.
His success in the Eredivisie led to a major transfer in July 2024, when he joined Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported €30 million. This fee established a new record as Feyenoord's most expensive outgoing transfer. Since arriving, he has demonstrated versatility, moving from his preferred number six role to playing as a right-back under coach Fabian Hürzeler.
On the international stage, Wieffer has represented the Netherlands, making his debut in March 2023. Despite facing injury setbacks, such as a thigh injury that ruled him out of the final Euro 2024 tournament, his technical profile—highlighted by high rankings in blocks and ball recoveries—continues to make him a standout performer in top-flight European football.
