The first Uruguayan to replicate a 50-year-old World Cup feat
In short: In the high-stakes theater of international football, certain milestones remain untouched for decades. Maximiliano Araújo recently broke one such barrier, mirroring a historic performance from 1970 and cementing his place in Uruguay's sporting lineage during a pivotal moment on the world stage.
Maximiliano "Maxi" Araújo’s ascent to the pinnacle of international football is marked by a rare statistical achievement. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing for Uruguay against Cape Verde in their second group-stage match, Araújo registered both a goal and an assist. This specific combination of contributions became a historic milestone: he was the first Uruguayan player to achieve this feat in a World Cup since Juan Mujica did so in 1970.
His journey to this moment began in the youth academy of Montevideo Wanderers, where he made his professional debut on March 11, 2018. After moving through various clubs, including a stint with Liga MX side Puebla until late 2019, Araújo joined Portuguese club Sporting CP in August 2024. His impact was immediate; he scored his first UEFA Champions League goal on November 5, 2024, in a victory over Manchester City.
While his rise has been meteoric, it was characterized by persistence regarding the national team. Although he was named in the preliminary squad for the 2022 World Cup, he was excluded from the final roster. He finally earned his senior debut on June 14, 2023, against Nicaragua. By the time he reached the 2026 tournament, he had evolved into a cornerstone of the squad, eventually being named to the Primeira Liga Team of the Season for 2025–26.
Beyond his technical output, Araújo has navigated modern sports complexities, including unverified social media rumors regarding his ancestral origins in Portuguese Goa. These claims were publicly denied by those close to him, highlighting the intersection of personal identity and public scrutiny in the era of globalized football.
