The remarkable ascent from non-League football to the Premier League
In short: In 2018, Maximilian Kilman achieved a feat rarely seen in modern football. Moving directly from the lower tiers to the top flight, he bypassed the traditional loan system, mirroring a rare trajectory once set by Chris Smalling over a decade earlier.
Born in Chelsea to Ukrainian parents, Maximilian Kilman’s footballing journey is a study in rapid progression. After developing in the academies of Fulham and Gillingham, Kilman entered the semi-professional ranks with Maidenhead United in 2015. His rise was punctuated by a stint on loan at Marlow during the 2016–17 season, but it was his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers on transfer deadline day in August 2018 that fundamentally altered his career path.
When Kilman made his senior Premier League debut on 4 May 2019, he became the first player since Chris Smalling's 2008 move from Maidstone United to Fulham to transition directly from non-League to the Premier League without intermediate loans. His impact at Wolves was immediate; by April 2019, head coach Nuno Espírito Santo praised his aggressive, high-quality presence in the first-team squad. He eventually rose to become club captain in August 2023, succeeding Rúben Neves.
Kilman's reliability was evidenced during the 2023–24 season, where he was one of only two outfield players—the other being William Saliba—to play every single minute of his Premier League campaign. This durability preceded a major transfer in July 2024, when he joined West Ham United on a seven-year contract for a reported £40 million. The move proved highly lucrative for his former club, Maidenhead United, which earned £4 million due to a 10% sell-on clause.
Beyond the pitch, Kilman's international identity was a subject of FIFA scrutiny. While eligible for Russia or Ukraine through his parents, a 2021 attempt by Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko to switch Kilman's allegiance was rejected. FIFA ruled that his 25 caps for the England national futsal team had permanently tied him to England for all forms of football.
