From Club Brugge academy to Premier League stardom: the rise of Maxim De Cuyper
In short: In just five years, this Belgian defender has transitioned from a youth academy prospect to a Premier League mainstay. Trace the rapid ascent of a player who went from a professional debut against Manchester United to representing his nation on the grandest European stages.
Born on 22 December 2000, Maxim De Cuyper’s professional journey began with high-stakes exposure. He made his senior debut for Club Brugge on 20 February 2020, appearing in a UEFA Europa League Round of 32 fixture against Manchester United. While he managed 73 minutes in a 1–1 draw during the first leg, the second leg proved more difficult, as Brugge suffered a 0–5 defeat in which De Cuyper played the full match.
To refine his skills, De Cuyper spent significant time gaining experience away from the Brugge first team. Following a stint with the reserve side, Club NXT, in late 2020, he joined Westerlo on loan. This period of development lasted two seasons, covering both the 2021–22 and 2022–23 campaigns. His progress at Brugge was so highly regarded that the club extended his contract through 2025 in early 2022.
The summer of 2025 marked a major turning point in his career when he transferred to the Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion. Signing a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee, he made an immediate impact, debuting in a 1–1 draw against Fulham on 16 August. This club success has mirrored his international progression; after debuting for Belgium against Montenegro in June 2024, he has since become a goalscorer for his country, notably finding the net in a 2–2 draw against Italy in October 2024.
