How a community-focused strategy turned a bankrupt franchise into a basketball dynasty
In short: In 2009, the Perth Wildcats were on the brink of bankruptcy. Today, they are the most successful franchise in NBL history. Discover how a radical shift toward community engagement and family-friendly values transformed a struggling club into a relentless winning machine.
The Wildcats' rise is a story of both sporting dominance and strategic cultural shifts. While the team has secured ten NBL championships—spanning four different decades—their most significant transformation occurred in 2009. At that time, owner Jack Bendat and managing director Nick Marvin moved away from traditional models to focus intensely on community engagement. This included increasing school visits from 20 per year to 100 in 2009, eventually reaching 220 by 2011.
This philosophy extended to the players, who were tasked with a 350-hour community obligation by 2019, significantly exceeding the requirements of the collective bargaining agreement. By implementing a zero-tolerance swearing policy and mandating that players acknowledge supporters with eye contact, the club built a 'sturdy culture' centered on accessibility and family-friendly values.
On the court, the Wildcats have established unprecedented consistency. Between 1987 and 2021, the team made the post-season for 35 consecutive years, a feat unmatched by any other professional sports team in Australia. This sustained excellence has seen them become the league's highest-drawing team, with home crowds frequently exceeding the 13,000 capacity of RAC Arena.
Their championship legacy is defined by eras of dominance, including a notable period in the 1990s. After winning their first title in 1990 led by MVP Ricky Grace, they achieved back-to-back championships in 1990 and 1991, becoming only the third team in NBL history to accomplish the feat at that time.
