In short: For over a century, the Bidwill family has steered the Arizona Cardinals. But behind the prestige of one of the NFL's oldest ownership lineages, a recent wave of arbitration complaints and lawsuits suggests a much more turbulent internal culture.

The Bidwill family's stewardship of the Cardinals is a rare feat in professional sports. Since Charles Bidwill purchased the Chicago-based franchise in 1933, the lineage has passed through three generations. Following the death of patriarch Bill Bidwill in 2019, his son Michael took over as chairman, continuing a tradition of ownership that includes the team's 1960 move to St. Louis and its eventual arrival in Arizona. The franchise's roots trace back even further to 1898, when it began as an independent club in Chicago. This long history makes the Cardinals one of the few NFL teams, alongside the Giants and Bears, to have remained under single-family control for generations.

Michael Bidwill’s tenure has been marked by both significant infrastructure triumphs and intense legal scrutiny. He was instrumental in the transition from Sun Devil Stadium to State Farm Stadium, a move that helped the team achieve 100 consecutive sellouts since the new venue opened in 2006. Beyond the field, Bidwill has held influential roles, including chairing the NFL's conduct and security committees and serving as Chairman of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. His leadership extends into the broader business community, having served as the head of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council from 2008 to 2010. He also sits on the board of the Pat Tillman Foundation.

However, the organization's reputation has recently been challenged by serious allegations of workplace misconduct. In 2023, a former vice president filed an arbitration complaint accusing Bidwill of fostering a culture of fear, harassment, and retaliation. While the Cardinals dismissed these claims as 'wildly false,' an April 2024 arbitration ruling ordered the team to pay $3,000,000 to the former executive for defamation. Further legal pressure arrived in 2025 with a harassment lawsuit from a former assistant, casting a shadow over the family's long-standing football dynasty. The controversy includes accusations that Bidwill used team resources to support a Supreme Court nominee in 2018. Additionally, he has faced claims regarding the cancellation of a 2019 survey intended to assess the team's internal culture.
