The striker who scored the fastest goal as a substitute
In short: In 2006, Michael Chopra achieved a feat of near-instantaneous impact during a Tyne–Wear derby. Coming off the bench just fifteen seconds before the restart, he found the net in one of the quickest scoring sequences in Premier League history.
Michael Chopra's career is a study in the volatility of professional football. A product of the Newcastle United youth system recruited in 1993, he spent six years at St James' Park without securing a regular first-team spot. Despite his pedigree, he was often sidelined by established stars like Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy, leading to a nomadic journey through loans at Watford, Nottingham Forest, and Barnsley.
His breakthrough came in the Championship with Cardiff City. After joining for £500,000 in 2006, he became a prolific scorer, netting 22 goals in 44 matches. This form earned him a high-profile move to Premier League side Sunderland in July 2007 for £5 million—a deal that sparked unrest among fans due to his Newcastle roots and the significant price tag.
While he enjoyed success at Cardiff, where he smashed the club's transfer record with a permanent move in 2009, his later career was marked by inconsistency. From scoring 14 goals for Ipswich Town in 2011 to a goal-less stint at Blackpool and a challenging debut season in India's inaugural Super League in 2014, Chopra’s journey highlights the difficulty of maintaining elite form across different leagues and environments.
Chopra eventually retired before making a rare comeback for West Allotment Celtic in 2022 and later joined Trethomas Bluebirds in 2026. His career serves as a reminder of how quickly a striker's fortunes can shift, from the 'on fire' heights of multi-goal hauls to the grueling reality of injury setbacks and fluctuating fitness levels.
