The first Panamanian to grace the MLS All-Star stage
In short: Michael Amir Murillo didn't just break barriers for Panama; he redefined a nation's footballing trajectory. From his youth development in San Francisco to becoming a cornerstone of Panama's historic first World Cup qualification, his journey illustrates how individual consistency can propel an entire country onto the global stage.
Murillo’s ascent began in the United States, where he graduated from San Francisco's youth setup. He made his senior debut during the 2014–15 campaign at just 18 years old, quickly establishing himself as a first-team regular. A pivotal moment in his early career occurred on August 26, 2015, when he helped San Francisco secure a notable 2–1 victory over the Mexican side Querétaro FC in the CONCACAF Champions League. This period also saw him win his first title with San Francisco after a penalty shootout victory against Chepo.
His move to the New York Red Bulls in 2017 marked a significant professional evolution. During his tenure, he became a reliable offensive threat from the right-back position, notably scoring in the final match played at RFK Stadium against D.C. United on October 22, 2017. His impact was felt most significantly during the 2018 season; he provided two assists in a CONCACAF Champions League victory over Club Tijuana that propelled the club to its first-ever semifinal appearance.
On August 1, 2018, he achieved a historic milestone by participating in the MLS All-Star Game against Juventus, becoming the first Panamanian ever to do so. While his club career has spanned Belgium's Anderlecht and France's Olympique de Marseille, his legacy is deeply tied to Panama's international success. Murillo was a key figure in the 2018 World Cup qualifying cycle, starting three of the final ten CONCACAF Hexagonal matches. His contributions were essential in helping Panama secure its first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Although he missed the final group match against Tunisia due to yellow cards received against Belgium and England, his role as a primary starter during that historic campaign remains a defining chapter of Panamanian sports history.
