The midfielder who broke records across Europe and conquered North America
In short: From a sixteen-year-old professional in MLS to a record-breaking scorer in Europe, Michael Bradley’s career is a masterclass in versatility. He transitioned from a high-energy midfielder in Serie A to a championship-winning captain in Toronto, proving his worth across the world's most elite soccer leagues.
Michael Bradley's professional journey began in 2004 when he signed a Project-40 contract with the MetroStars, turning professional at just sixteen. His early years were marked by rapid ascent and significant milestones; in January 2006, he became the youngest MLS player ever to be sold, transferring to the Dutch club Heerenveen for $250,000. During his time in the Eredivisie, he demonstrated remarkable scoring ability, particularly during the 2007–08 season when he recorded twenty goals in all competitions.
His success in Europe was not limited to the Netherlands. By exceeding Brian McBride's thirteen goals for Fulham, Bradley established a major milestone in January 2008, setting a new high for American players scoring in a European top flight. His career subsequently took him through the German Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the English Premier League with Aston Villa, and the Italian Serie A with Chievo and Roma. In Italy, he earned the nickname "The General" from local supporters.
Bradley's impact was perhaps most profound upon his return to Major League Soccer with Toronto FC in 2014. As a central figure and captain, he led the club to an unprecedented domestic treble in 2017, winning the Canadian Championship, the Supporters' Shield, and the MLS Cup. By the time he retired in 2023, Bradley had amassed over 300 total appearances in MLS and over 150 international caps for the United States, having debuted for the senior national team in 2006.
