In short: Before becoming the voice of WWE's SmackDown, Sean Michael Coulthard was a hard-hitting journalist. He covered high-stakes political campaigns and international conflicts, navigating the intense realities of global news before transitioning into the high-drama world of professional wrestling commentary.

Born in Syracuse, New York, on December 8, 1966, Michael Cole—born Sean Michael Coulthard—began his career in serious journalism. After graduating from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1988, he worked for CBS Radio. His early portfolio included covering the 1988 presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis and the 1992 campaign of Bill Clinton. He initially joined the company in mid-1997. His professional journey began with a degree in broadcast journalism.

His journalistic credentials were further tested during some of the late 20th century's most intense conflicts. In 1993, he documented the 51-day Waco, Texas, Branch Davidian compound siege, then dedicated nine months to reporting on the 1994 Yugoslavian civil war. In 1995, he also covered the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing. He also reported on the 1996 presidential campaigns of Steve Forbes and Bob Dole.

In 1997, Cole transitioned to the World Wrestling Federation (later WWE) after a recommendation from Todd Pettengill. While he has spent much of his career as a play-by-play announcer for brands like SmackDown and Raw, he has also engaged in complex on-screen storylines. This includes a notable heel turn in 2010, where he became the 'Voice of the WWE,' and a controversial 2004 angle involving Heidenreich. He even made a brief in-ring appearance in 2007 against Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.

Beyond the broadcast booth, Cole has held various leadership and hosting roles, including serving as the vice president of announcing between 2020 and 2024. His career has seen him navigate the shift from traditional broadcast journalism to the scripted, high-octane spectacle of modern sports entertainment. He also provided commentary for the original SmackDown! television program.
