The record-breaking goalkeeper who mastered the art of the backup role
In short: Mickaël Landreau holds the record for the most appearances in Ligue 1 history, yet he spent much of his international career watching from the sidelines. How does a player achieve legendary longevity while serving as the third-choice goalkeeper for his national team?
Between 1996 and 2014, Mickaël Landreau amassed 618 appearances in France's top flight, playing for Nantes, Paris Saint-Germain, Lille, and Bastia. His career was defined by remarkable consistency and a knack for being at the center of major milestones. Appointed Nantes' captain at age 19, his thirteen-year tenure included major honours, notably the 2001 Ligue 1 championship and back-to-back Coupe de France victories in 1999 and 2000.
Despite his domestic dominance, Landreau’s international career followed a different pattern. While he was a long-term fixture in the France squad, he often functioned as a backup. He was part of the squads that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2001 and 2003 and was a member of the 2006 World Cup runners-up team. Remarkably, he donned the number one shirt throughout the 2006 World Cup and UEFA Euro 2004, even though Fabien Barthez and Grégory Coupet were the primary and secondary keepers.
His resilience was tested by significant physical setbacks, such as an articular disk operation in 2003 and a massive cruciate ligament injury shortly after joining Lille in 2009. Even in moments of high drama, such as a failed Panenka-style penalty in a 2004 cup final, he maintained a stoic professional identity. By the time he retired at age 35, he had not only broken the record for most Ligue 1 appearances—surpassing Jean-Luc Ettori's 602 matches—but had also transitioned into management, serving as an assistant at Paris FC and manager at Lorient.
