From the 27th round to the major leagues: the resilient journey of Mickey Gasper
In short: Most players drafted in the 27th round never see a Major League field. For Mickey Gasper, the path from Bryant University to the big leagues required navigating pandemic cancellations, multiple roster shifts, and a historic statistical surge that briefly placed him among the elite.
Mickey Gasper’s professional trajectory is a testament to persistence in the highly competitive landscape of Major League Baseball. After a standout collegiate career at Bryant University from 2015 to 2018—where he maintained a .344 batting average—Gasper entered the professional ranks via the 2018 MLB draft. He was selected by the New York Yankees in the 27th round, appearing as the 817th overall pick.
His ascent was not linear. Gasper faced a total loss of playing time in 2020 when the minor league season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After years of navigating the minor leagues with various organizations, he achieved a significant milestone on August 12, 2024, when the Boston Red Sox selected him to the 40-man roster and promoted him to the majors for his debut at Fenway Park.
Gasper’s career has been marked by extreme statistical volatility and high-level performance. In August 2024, he achieved a 1.671 on-base plus slugging (OPS), a figure that stands as the fifth highest mark for any single month in MLB history for a player with at least 30 plate appearances. This period of dominance saw him move between the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and the major league roster, eventually leading to a trade to the Minnesota Twins in late 2024 and subsequent stints with the Washington Nationals and back to the Red Sox in 2026.
