From a broken shoulder to an international acting powerhouse
In short: Before he became a face of global streaming hits, Miguel Ángel Silvestre was destined for the tennis court. A career-altering injury in Hungary forced a pivot from professional sports to the stage, eventually leading him from local pageants to lead roles in Netflix's most ambitious productions.
Born in Castellón de la Plana on April 6, 1982, Miguel Ángel Silvestre Rambla initially pursued an athletic path. His goal was to become a professional tennis player, but his trajectory shifted abruptly after he suffered a shoulder injury during a tournament in Hungary. This setback led him to consider studying physiotherapy—a field his father, also a physiotherapist, worked in—before his aunt introduced him to the world of theatre.
Silvestre's transition into performance was multifaceted. He studied drama, physical theatre, modern dance, and acrobatics, eventually winning the Mister Castelló 2002 pageant. His professional debut came in 2005 with the drama Life and Colour. Following his portrayal of El Duque within Sin tetas no hay paraíso, he achieved rapid fame and subsequently took part in notable works including Velvet and I'm So Excited by Pedro Almodóvar.
In recent years, Silvestre has become a staple of international streaming content. He took on lead roles in Netflix's Sense8 (2015) as an action movie star in Mexico City and appeared in Narcos (2017) as Franklin Jurado, serving as a real-life consultant for the Cali Cartel. His versatility is further evidenced by his work in HBO's 30 monedas (2020), Sky Rojo (2021), and Money Heist, where he joined the main cast for the fifth season to play René.
His recent projects continue to span diverse formats, including the Mexican film La boda de mi mejor amigo (2019) and the procedural miniseries Weiss & Morales, which premiered in May 2025. From his roots in Spanish television to becoming a protagonist for ViacomCBS's Los enviados, Silvestre’s career illustrates a successful navigation from sports to high-concept global media.
