In short: In 2016, a striker from Cortuluá shattered scoring records and conquered the continent. Miguel Borja’s journey from the lower leagues of Colombia to becoming the South American Footballer of the Year is a masterclass in clinical persistence and high-stakes transfers.

Miguel Borje Hernández's ascent was not a linear climb. After professional beginnings with Deportivo Cali in 2011 and a brief, difficult period at Cúcuta Deportivo, Borja found his rhythm in the Colombian second division. Playing for Cortuluá, he earned a reputation as a powerful, complete goalscorer. His 2016 Apertura campaign was particularly historic; he netted 19 goals in just 21 matches, surpassing the previous single-season league record of 18 goals held by Jackson Martínez.

This prolific form triggered a rapid ascent through the continent's elite clubs. Following his breakthrough, he joined Atlético Nacional, where he became a pivotal figure in their 2016 Copa Libertadores triumph, scoring decisive goals against São Paulo and Independiente del Valle. His dominance that year earned him the title of South American Footballer of the Year. By 2017, his value had skyrocketed, leading to a US$10.5 million move to the Brazilian giants Palmeiras, making him the fourth most expensive transfer in Brazilian football history.

Borja's international career has been equally significant. A member of Colombia's 2013 South American Youth Championship winning squad and the 2016 Rio Olympics team, he transitioned to the senior national side in late 2016. He has represented Colombia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and reached the podium in both the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments. His career continues to span major leagues, from stints in Italy with Livorno and Argentina with River Plate to his recent move to Mexico's Club América.
