From New Jersey high school standout to NFL tight end: The career of Mike Gesicki
In short: Born on October 3, 1995, Mike Gesicki evolved from a multi-sport high school star in New Jersey into a professional NFL tight end. After a standout collegiate career at Penn State, he has navigated multiple professional contracts and seasons, demonstrating consistent performance across several teams in the league.
Michael William Gesicki grew up in Stafford Township, New Jersey, where he became a local legend at Southern Regional High School. By the time he graduated in 2014, he had established school records in three different sports: basketball scoring with 1,866 points, volleyball blocks with 519, and football receiving with 1,817 yards across 103 receptions. This versatility laid the foundation for his transition to college football at Penn State, where he played from 2014 to 2017.
His collegiate performance caught the attention of the NFL, leading the Miami Dolphins to select him as the 42nd overall pick in the 2018 draft. His professional journey began with a four-year, $6.61 million contract. Over his years in Miami, Gesicki steadily increased his production, notably recording 73 receptions for 780 yards during the 2021 season. Following his time in Florida, he moved to the New England Patriots in 2023 on a one-year deal before joining the Cincinnati Bengals in 2024.
Gesicki’s tenure with the Bengals has been marked by both high-impact performances and physical challenges. In 2024, he recorded 65 receptions for 665 yards. In 2025, he signed a three-year, $25.5 million contract with Cincinnati, though his season was interrupted by a pectoral injury sustained in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers. After being placed on injured reserve, he returned to action in late November, finishing the 2025 season with 28 receptions and 307 yards.
Throughout his career, Gesicki has remained a consistent presence at the tight end position. From his early days as a high school athlete in Manahawkin to his current role in the NFL, his trajectory reflects the rigorous demands of professional football. His ability to adapt to different team systems and recover from mid-season injuries highlights the resilience required to sustain a career at the highest level of the sport.
