From tag team specialist to world champion: the evolution of Mike Santana
In short: Mike Santana spent years as a decorated tag team wrestler before reinventing himself as a singles star. After a high-profile tenure in AEW and a transformative return to TNA, he captured his first world championship. Now performing as Cruz Montana in WWE, his career reflects a decade of constant professional reinvention.
Born Mark Sanchez in 1991, the wrestler debuted in 2007, initially competing on the independent circuit in New York and New Jersey. By 2012, he had formed a long-standing partnership with Angel Ortiz under the name EYFBO. The duo eventually joined Impact Wrestling in 2017, rebranding as Santana and Ortiz and becoming central figures in the Latin American Xchange (LAX) faction led by Konnan. During this period, they dominated the tag team division, securing the Impact World Tag Team Championship four times and setting a record for the longest single reign at 261 days.
In 2019, the pair transitioned to All Elite Wrestling, where they joined Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle. However, internal friction eventually led to the team's dissolution in 2023. Following a period of injury and personal growth, Santana returned to TNA in 2024 as a singles competitor. This shift proved pivotal; he engaged in intense feuds with rivals like Mustafa Ali and Josh Alexander, culminating in his first TNA World Championship victory in October 2025. He held the title twice, with his second reign lasting 164 days.
Santana’s career is marked by his ability to adapt across different promotions and roles. Beyond his championship success, he was recognized as the Most Inspirational Wrestler of the Year in 2025. In July 2026, he signed with WWE, adopting the ring name Cruz Montana for the NXT brand. His journey from an independent tag team specialist to a world-ranked singles athlete highlights the fluid nature of modern professional wrestling, where performers frequently pivot between team dynamics and individual pursuits to sustain their relevance and competitive edge.
