From wide receiver to elite cornerback: the unlikely evolution of Richard Sherman
In short: Drafted in the fifth round, Richard Sherman was once projected as a mid-round pick. After a career-altering knee injury at Stanford, he transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback, eventually becoming a cornerstone of the NFL's most formidable defense and a five-time Pro Bowler.
Richard Sherman's professional trajectory was defined by a significant positional shift. While playing for the Stanford Cardinal from 2006 to 2010, he initially served as a wide receiver, even leading the team in receiving as a freshman in 2006 with 581 yards and three touchdowns. However, a season-ending knee injury in 2008 prompted him to request a move to cornerback, a decision that would ultimately define his 11-season NFL career.
The 154th pick during the 2011 NFL draft, Sherman was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks and turned into a key part of the 'Legion of Boom' defensive unit. This unit was remarkably dominant, leading the NFL in pass defense in both 2013 and 2014. During his tenure in Seattle, the Seahawks' scoring defense led the league for four consecutive years between 2012 and 2015, a feat not matched by any team since the 1950s Cleveland Browns.
Sherman's individual accolades reflect his elite status, including five Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro honors, including three first-team selections. His 2013 season was particularly notable as he led the NFL in interceptions. Beyond his defensive prowess, Sherman's background is rooted in high-level athleticism; in 2005, he was a California state triple jump champion with a mark of 15.44 meters and a highly ranked hurdler.
His career spanned multiple franchises, including three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers—where he reached Super Bowl LIV—and a final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite early skepticism from scouts regarding his draft position, Sherman is now widely considered one of the greatest cornerbacks in the history of the sport.
