In short: When the Arizona Coyotes moved into Glendale in 2003, they weren't just building a stadium; they were creating a venue that would break records. Beyond its ice and concerts, the arena became the site of a historic first for tribal naming rights in major professional sports.

The Desert Diamond Arena (formerly known as Glendale Arena) was born from a need to fix a logistical failure. The Coyotes' previous home, America West Arena, was a basketball venue hastily retrofitted for hockey. This resulted in a cramped layout where the floor barely fit a regulation rink and upper-level seats hung over the boards, obstructing views for 3,000 spectators. To accommodate fans properly, the team moved to Glendale, beginning construction on April 3, 2002.

During the middle of the 2003–04 NHL season, the stadium commenced operations. While it served as a premier hockey hub for nearly two decades, its identity has been fluid. It has hosted everything from high-profile concerts by artists like Prince and Taylor Swift to 'February Frenzy' high school tournaments since 2005. Notably, the venue also became a temporary home for various football leagues and even served as an overflow site for a major memorial service in September 2025.

The arena’s most significant cultural milestone occurred in 2014. A landmark milestone occurred when a nine-year naming rights contract with Gila River Casinos was secured; this made the Gila River Indian Community the initial federally recognised Native American tribe to possess such an arrangement for a site hosting a premier professional sports league across North America. This partnership underscored the arena's role as a site of significant economic and social evolution.

Following the Coyotes' departure in 2022, the arena transitioned into a multi-use entertainment hub. It secured its first permanent tenant since the NHL team left with the Arizona Rattlers in 2024. Today, it balances diverse programming, ranging from UFC events—which hold the venue's highest grossing records—to hosting the PBR World Finals in May 2027.
