How a tennis prodigy overcame injury and financial struggle to reach the top
In short: From a middle-class upbringing in Rosario to the Olympic stage, Nadia Podoroska’s journey has been anything but easy. After facing career-threatening injuries and financial hurdles, she transformed her game through neuroscience and mental training to become a formidable force on the professional WTA circuit.
Born on February 10, 1997, in Rosario, Argentina, Podoroska’s path to professional tennis was marked by significant obstacles. Growing up in the Fisherton neighborhood, she was the first in her family to play the sport, starting at the Fisherton Athletic Club when she was just five years old. Her early career was complicated by the financial difficulties of competing internationally and a series of injuries in late 2017 that threatened to end her professional aspirations.
To stabilize her career, Podoroska relocated to Alicante, Spain, to gain better access to weekly competition. This move coincided with a shift in her training approach; she began working with Pedro Merani, incorporating mental training based on neuroscience and bompu zen to refine her competitive attitude. This psychological evolution helped her achieve a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 36 on July 12, 2021, and a doubles ranking of No. 62 on October 18, 2021.
Her breakthrough moments include becoming the first qualifier to reach the French Open semifinals in October 2020, a feat that earned her the WTA Newcomer of the Year title. She has also proven her ability to compete with the elite, notably defeating 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams at the Italian Open in May 2021. By 2026, her resilience was on full display when she reached her first WTA Tour singles final at the SP Open, becoming the first Argentine woman to reach a WTA final since Paula Ormaechea in 2013.
