Mexico breaks their drought to claim the 2024–25 CONCACAF Nations League title
In short: The 2024–25 CONCACAF Nations League concluded with a major shift in regional power. While the United States entered as three-time defending champions, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by Panama. Ultimately, Mexico secured their first-ever title by defeating Panama in a high-stakes final match.
The 2024–25 tournament was the fourth season of this international association football competition, involving all 41 member associations of CONCACAF. The competition followed a multi-tiered structure designed to test teams across different levels of skill. League A, the top tier, featured sixteen teams. The four highest-placed sides via the CONCACAF Ranking Index skipped straight to the quarter-finals as a reward for excellence, whereas the remaining twelve sides fought through a Swiss-system group stage.
The tournament's mechanics relied heavily on promotion and relegation to maintain competitive tension. Teams that finished fifth or sixth in League A, and those finishing fourth in League B, were relegated to a lower league for the following season. Conversely, group winners from Leagues B and C, along with the best second-placed team from League C, earned promotion. This movement ensures that the hierarchy of North American, Central American, and Caribbean football remains in constant flux.
The schedule for the season was expansive, beginning with the group stage in September 2024 and culminating in the Nations League Finals in March 2025. Beyond the trophy itself, the competition served a critical secondary purpose: it acted as a qualification pathway for the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. By integrating these two major events, CONCACAF created a high-stakes environment where every match in the Nations League carried significant weight for a team's continental standing.
